Great article. Nature has a built-in defense against many kinds of genetic abnormalities - for example, sperm with chromosomal abnormalities are believed to have motility disturbances that make them less likely to be the first one to the waiting egg or less able to penetrate the egg's dense covering. The mother's uterus is well suited to provide the appropriate environment for early cell division during a time during which the embryo is extremely vulnerable to environmental disturbances. IVF bypasses these and other natural defenses, so it should not be surprising to anyone that there is an increased risk for fetal abnormalities.

The truly sad thing is that many fertility doctors dismiss this as no big thing, since morphologically abnormal embryos or embryos diagnosed with genetic abnormalities using preimplantation genetic diagnosis can just be discarded, abnormal fetuses can just be aborted, and then you can try again and hope for a better outcome. Oh, and *BONUS!* -they can charge the patient or their insurance company more money for another attempt.
