Do you know what the secret is to get kids in public schools to perform as well as those in private schools?
Let me let you in on the secret…PARENTAL INVOLVMENT! Who would of thought? Something as simple as having parents play an “active” role in their childrens education could actually make a difference?!
Tutors. Learning camps. Private schools. Have you exhausted all of the resources in your child’s quest for academic success? According to a study from the Center for Education Policy, what helps them the most is you! The research shows low-income kids in public schools do just as well as their peers in private schools as long as parents are involved.
“You can see a huge difference between students where they just kind of go to school and the student where the mom, the single mom is involved,” said Christopher Pender with the Urban Family Council.
Jack Jennings with the Center on Education Policy said it’s not surprising that many studies conclude private schooling is superior.
“The reason kids in private schools do better is because parents have more expectation that their kids will go to college, because parents are more involved in the school,” he told Family News in Focus.
Nothing beats showing good old-fashioned interest in your child, said Tracey Bailey with the Association of American Educators.
“It’s not the physical location or the school setting that a child is in,” she said, “but the degree of parental involvement, hands-on discipline and encouragement and support from parents. That’s the key issue.”
